They come in threes
Wow. Yesterday, three fairly famous celebrities passed away: Sandra Dee, née Alexandra Zuck, 1950s and '60s actress and teen idol; Hunter S. Thompson, journalist, author, former
Rolling Stone columnist, and all-around wacky guy; and John Raitt, whom I admittedly don't know anything about other than that he was popular on the broadway scene and that he's Bonnie Raitt's father. I'd never heard about celebrity deaths coming in threes before, but apparently this is a morbid trend that has surfaced over the years. Sandra Dee was in movies like
Gidget and
Imitation of Life, whose career began to fail after her 5-year marriage to Bobby Darin ended in divorce in 1965, damaging her former squeaky-clean image. She was played by Kate Bosworth in 2004's
Beyond the Sea, a movie which she reportedly liked. Hunter S. Thompson came up with a new kind of non-fiction writing that he called "gonzo journalism" and was responsible for writing
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, amongst other books. He seemed like a very interesting individual, from what I've read of him and from quotes of his. Hunter Stockton Thompson was also known as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, and was played by Bill Murray in
Where The Buffalo Roam and by Johnny Depp in the film version of
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Go to
Wikiquote to read some of his quotes. To Sandra Dee, Hunter Thompson, and John Raitt: rest in peace.
In other news, in Orange County in Southern California where they are currently having very bad storms, a 16-year-old girl was sitting at her computer on the second floor of a building (she lived with her family above a store they own) when a huge boulder crashed through her window, struck her, and killed her. This is the kind of thing that freaks me out, because, obviously, I use my computer a lot and because this is the kind of thing that could happen to any one of us -- one minute, you're sitting at your computer, maybe checking your e-mail, or messaging a friend, or something, and the next minute you're just...gone, and the Online World doesn't even have any idea what's just happened. Probably wondering where you've gone to or why you aren't writing back or... I don't know, it just freaks me out. I really hope the storms and everything let up really soon... :/
